Is it offensive to call a gay man a poof or poofy?

I'm gay and my mum calls gay bars poofy bars and gay men poofs! I know she is joking but is it the same as calling a black person a '******' or a Pakistani a 'paki'? I don't know whether or not to tell her not to say it because I don't like it! :(
