What is it that many modern artists are trying to express?

I see alot of art shows and view alot of modern art and try to understand what it is exactly are they trying to capture and give to viewers?Alot of the spectators look kind of bored drinking or mingling with others about, who knows?not art.The majority of modern art that I have seen is drab and does not stir up any kind of emotion with the viewer.
